Myth
:"Athletes don't need extra protein"
I find this to be the most annoying myth. Lord, when will this one
go away? Now the average reader person is probably thinking "who
in the world still believes that ridiculous statement?" The answer
is a great deal of people, even well educated medical professionals
and scientists who should know better, still believe this to be
true. Don't forget, the high carb, low fat, low protein diet recommendations
are alive and well with the average nutritionist, doctor, and of
course the "don't confuse us with the facts" media following close
behind. For the past half century or so scientists using crude methods
and poor study design with sedentary people have held firm to the
belief that bodybuilders, strength athletes of various types, runners,
and other highly active people did not require any more protein
than Mr. Potato Head.....err, I mean the average couch potato. However,
In the past few decades researchers using better study designs and
methods with real live athletes have come to a different conclusion
altogether, a conclusion hard training bodybuilders have known for
years. The fact that active people do indeed require far more protein
than the RDA to keep from losing hard earned muscle tissue when
dieting or increasing muscle tissue during the off season.
In a recent review paper on the subject one of the top researchers
in the field (Dr. Peter Lemon) states "...These data suggest that
the RDA for those engaged in regular endurance exercise should be
about 1.2-1.4 grams of protein/kilogram of body mass (150%-175%
of the current RDA) and 1.7 - 1.8 grams of protein/kilogram of body
mass per day (212%-225% of the current RDA) for strength exercisers."
Another group of researchers in the field of protein metabolism
have come to similar conclusions repeatedly. They found that strength
training athletes eating approximately the RDA/RNI for protein showed
a decreased whole body protein synthesis (losing muscle!) on a protein
intake of 0.86 grams per kilogram of bodyweight. They came to an
almost identical conclusion as that of Dr. Lemon in recommending
at least 1.76g per kilogram of bodyweight per day for strength training
athletes for staying in positive nitrogen balance/increases in whole
body protein synthesis.
This same group found in later research that endurance athletes
also need far more protein than the RDA/RNI and that men catabolize
(break down) more protein than women during endurance exercise.
They concluded "In summary, protein requirements for athletes performing
strength training are greater than sedentary individuals and are
above the current Canadian and US recommended daily protein intake
requirements for young healthy males."
All I can say to that is, no sh%# Sherlock?!

Melvin
Scores First Pro Win
California's Melvin Anthony flexed to his first pro
victory by winning the 2004 Night of Champions in a close run race
with second place Darrem Charles. Anthony was fuller and better
proportioned than Charles who was more cut -- in fact he's never
been more cut. Most observers seemed to think that Charles' evening
posing routine bettered Anthony's, but the judges scored it even,
and Anthony won the two pre-judging rounds and the posedown round.
Richard Jones was third, but it was clear he was not at his best;
but in the final analysis, third in subpar condition is no mean
feat. Ahmad Haidar should have been in the top three, and as far
as the audience was concerned the sacrilege of the evening was Pavol
Jablonicky, whose fifth place sparked the boofest of the evening.
The top five qualify for the 2004 Mr. Olympia contest in Las Vegas
in October.
There were 46 bodybuilders entered
in this years show making it one of the largest pro contests ever
held.

Night Of The Champions
The Night Of The Champions bodybuilding display on the 23rd of May
was a great success. Nick Jones from Gen-Tec Nutrition put on a
great display for the 200+ people who showed up. Each bodybuilder
went through their routine and was then interviewed by Nick on
stage. But the athletes were the stars and put on a great show.
Jason Bednarz
was in great condition. Unfortunately Jason failed to place at the
NABBA Southern Hemisphere in what must of been a tough class.
Big Danny
Craig and the graceful Teri Roberts. Danny went on to place 3rd at
the Southern Hemisphere and Teri won the Masters Figure. Both are
going to the NABBA Worlds.
The
ageless Kym Johncock. Kym won the Over 50 Masters at the Southern
Hemisphere.

My Contest Preparation
As I write this I am approaching my fourth week on the Shape Up precontest diet. This diet has been a dream to follow and the food is plentiful and tasty. I have plenty of energy and my strength is still going up. In the first 3 weeks I have only lost 1.4kgs but my body fat has dropped from 20.5% (yes that was a typo last month), to 17.5%. This equates to muscle gain while losing body fat!

My supplement program is very basic. The only protein powder I take is either Met-Rx or Opti-Pro meal only after training or as my last meal at night. I take 15g of Glutamine a day, 10g of Musashi essential amino acids and 10g of Musashi branched chain aminos. My creatine is from Meta Cel which I reckon is awesome, and I take anti oxidants and vitamin C at bedtime. I don't take any thermogenics yet but will introduce them as the show gets closer.
If you are thinking of competing or just want to get in shape, give Shape Up a call.

IFBB Pro In Store at Australian Muscle
IFBB Pro, John Davie visited Australian Muscle on Thursday 13th of May from 11:30am.
John was in store for well over 2 hours and spoke to a captive
audience about anything and everything. John told us to watch out
for a huge shake up in the IFBB, with Wayne Demillia quitting the
IFBB and setting up the Pro Division. This has already been
confirmed by the IFBB. Check out

Think About It.
Accept that the Truth is in the Middle
People tend to have "all or none" thinking about a variety of issues. Some people eat no carbohydrates, others consume exclusively high-carbs. Some people are overly reliant on machines, while others won't go near one. Then you have your HIT followers verses multiple-set believers.
Here's a quick way to get to the bottom of things: the most optimal approach is the middle path. Every "way" has benefits and drawbacks. No method or approach is entirely beneficial or destructive. Get out of the rut; get back toward the middle. |

WHAT'S
NEW?

Ronnie Coleman - The Cost of Redemption

The DVD from Video Master Mits Okabe we all have been waiting for is out now! Ronnie Coleman - The Cost of Redemption! It was taped in August 2003 and shows Ronnie`s workouts for the 2003 Olympia! (And we sure all remember that Ronnie shocked the BB world last October!) So how did Ronnie do it? He competed about 40 lbs heavier than in 2002 and was just as hard!
On the 3 + hour DVD you will find lot of footage of Ronnie having his meals, Ronnie and his cars (Ronnie in the HUMMER.......Unbelievable......) and some very funny bonus footage! (Ronnie & his nails!!!!! - MUST SEE!). Sean and I were gobsmacked by some the gym footage. Watching Ronnie do 800lb squata and 500lbs benches is pretty inspirational. One of the funniest scenes is watching him make breakfast.....1 litre of eggs whites and a kilo of oats all mixed together - yum.

Meta-Cel

This product has had the best feedback I have seen with any product I have sold for a long time. Sean and I are also using it, and we both reckon this is best creatine product we have used....period! I put on 2kg's in 10 days and got stronger in every exercise. The fullness and pump you get in the gym is awesome. Next time you need to get more creatine, give Meta Cel ago. If you're not happy, there is a money back guarantee.
Meta-CEL is a new dietary supplement designed specifically for individuals who are trying to gain lean body mass fast, without adding fat weight. Meta-CEL provides a precise synergistic blend of two revolutionary new complexes-the patent-pending Phosphitol™ and the exclusive Potentin™, shown in recent studies to help promote volumizer transport into muscle cells and increase lean body mass-safely and effectively, without the use of high amounts of sugars and/or carbohydrates, harmful pro-hormones, or pro-steroids.
Potentin and Phosphitol work synergistically within Meta-CEL to enhance two different functions in the body: the highest achievable gut tolerance and increased myocellular (muscle cell) retention of creatine-formulated to promote complete absorption (thereby avoiding any possible intestinal distress) and to enhance whole body creatine retention... all without adding unnecessary sugars or producing insulin spikes, which makes it ideal for "carbo-phobics" or calorie cutters.
First, Phosphitol contains a vital "energy-producing" compound stored in muscle cells. "Supersaturating" the muscles with elements in this revolutionary complex may "open the door" to new muscle growth by activating the muscle cells to respond to increased hydration within cells, which may assist in muscle cell development and gains in lean or fat-free mass.
Next, Potentin contains critical "nutrient-driving" elements, which may increase the activity of existing creatine-specific proteins in muscle cells. Using this compound may help "revolve the door" by potentiating or boosting the effects of Phosphitol and transporting its primary components into the muscle cells, to store them there and promote muscle cell volume.

The
Whey

Do
you have a slow metabolism? Do you carry extra weight around
the waist? Do you want lean muscle mass? Do you follow a high
protein low carbohydrate diet? Are you 'cutting up' for competition?
Are you a vegetarian? Do you find it hard to get enough protein
from your diet? Do you want a product that is high protein
but still tastes great?
THE WHEY is designed to meet the requirements of athletes,
slow metabolism types or followers of a high protein diet,
and is perfect for both males and females.
Protein
is the King
Protein is the nutrient that provides the structural building
blocks for all the tissues for your body, including lean muscle
tissue. It provides nitrogen groups for muscle protein retention
- something carbohydrates can't do. THE WHEY is 90% blend
of pure Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate.
Lean Mass and Cutting Up
Some weight trainers have already achieved the Mass Gain they
want and now want to 'cut up'. Competitive bodybuilders approaching
the last few weeks want to cut down on carbohydrates. THE
WHEY can assist.
Vegetarians
Vegetarians often find it hard to get enough protein in their
diets; a daily drink of THE WHEY with its blend of Whey Protein
Isolate and Concentrate can assist here too.
Tastes
Great
THE WHEY is 90% protein and has only 1.4g of carbohydrates
per serve. Most high protein powders have a taste issue, because
it's difficult to make them taste ok without some carbohydrates!
Years of careful research and formulation at Musashi has produced
a genuinely great tasting product, but with the inclusion
of the absolute minimum amount of carbohydrates.
Undenatured = Easy to Digest
You may have found that some other protein powders can cause
stomach discomfort, bloating and flatulence. This is because
the digestive enzymes are unable to break down the complex
and poorly processed protein chains and lactose, which then
pass down through the digestive tract to be broken down by
bacteria.
The
Instantised Whey Protein Isolate used in THE WHEY is a soluble,
spray-dried product manufactured using the latest ultrafiltration
and cross-flow microfiltration technology. It then has been
surface coated with soy lecithin to aid dispersibility and
solubility.
This process filters out denatured protein, providing a product
that is low in fat and high in quality whey proteins. This
preserves the glycomacropeptides (GMP) that enhance immune
function.
Improved Immune Function
Undenatured whey protein, which is found in THE WHEY, has
been recognized by the medical community for improving immune
system function and detoxification. Whey Proteins aid in the
replenishment of Glutathione, which effectively enhances the
body's immune response, and studies have shown depleted levels
of glutathione are associated with enhanced toxicity and a
weakened immune system.
Weakened immune function results in time off training due
to flu and viruses. Heavy training loads can create an 'Overtraining
Syndrome' effect with resultant lack of muscle gains. These
training loads also increase free radical formation and tissue
damage. By enhancing antioxidant production in the body; whey
proteins can protect your body against this oxidative damage.
High in Glutamine Peptides and BCAA'S
These two factors are the two fundamental muscle-building
and recovery nutrients.
The
Whey 1.75 kg $79:95
The Whey 3.75kg $155:00

Muscle
Ute
Those of you who have been to the shop recently may have noticed
the new Aussie Muscle Falcon Ute. Yes, I have lashed out and bought
a 2001 model EA ute. Finished in a striking dark blue duco with
green and gold sign writing depicting the flexing kangaroo, it's
an eye catcher. I want to see just how eye catching this ute is.
If you see the Aussie Muscle ute on the road, call me on 8373 0735,
and tell me where you saw it, and you will win a prize. The first
person to call me each month wins the prize. Seeing the ute in the
shop carpark, in my driveway, or at Limbo Gym, does not count. In
the past month the ute has been at Sellicks Beach, Adelaide International
Raceway, and in the Adelaide hills, so I do get around.

The Trim Trolley. Really.

If you're going to buy a grocery cart full of Tim Tams and Coke, you might as well burn a few extra calories while doing it, right? That seems to be the idea behind the Trim Trolley, a shopping cart that tracks the amount of calories the pusher is burning through a sensor on the handle bar.
And it builds muscle too! That's right, the Trim Trolley has a resistance wheel that makes it hard to push! Resistance is adjustable on a scale from 1 to 10.
The carts debuted in Tesco stores last week, the largest supermarket chain in London. Will regular people choose to use a harder-to-push cart? We kinda doubt it.
.
Hotels for Cardio Junkies
The Hilton hotel chain in the US is now offering "fitness guest rooms" that come with an in-room treadmill. The cost? About 15 bucks over the standard rate.
We asked Hilton how much it would cost over the standard rate to get that skinny hoochie Paris sent up to the room, but they hung up on us. Bastards.
Yeah, But Does It Make You Go Faster?
If you're a runner, this is going to be interesting. If you're a geek, you'll like it a lot. If you're a geek who runs, you just might spontaneously combust.

This new running shoe from Adidas contains an internal sensor and a 20-megahertz microprocessor. Supposedly, the thing actually takes readings and adjusts the amount of cushioning and shape of the shoe depending on the type of surface on which you run. Now if they can only make one that accesses muscle imbalances and estimates 1 RM's when you squat.
The "Adidas 1" shoes will run about $250 and require a battery change every 100 hours, just like Sean's new high tech inflatable girlfriend.
