Australian
Grand Prix 2004
On March 20th I ventured down to Melbourne for the 4th IFBB Australian Grand Prix determined to feast my eyes on some freaky muscle. I was not disappointed! Fifteen pros descended on Melbourne and among them were 6 of the top ten Pro's in the World. The show was well run and extremely well attended. Promoter Tony Doherty needed a good show coming in on the back of last years disappointment when only 8 Pro's showed up. The only disappointment I thought was the small number of trade stands, but that could be due some cold feet by companies because of last year. I'm sure they'll be back next year considering the success this year, especially with Dexter, Chris, and Marcus already re-signing to do the show.
Some of the highlights in the foyer were the supplement company stands with everyone having something to give away and lots to promote. The Max's stand was a stand out with scantily clad models working the foyer, giving out brochures. The AST stand had a huge and cut Warren Clampitt promoting their products. Warren told me that he will be doing the INBA Australia and the Musclemania, and will be out to prove that he is one of the top Naturals in the country. Major sponsor Designer Whey were doing a roaring trade with their protein bars.

Some of the
trade stands
A powerlifting bench meet was held during the day with Ange Gallatti benching an Australian record 235kg at a bodyweight of only 78 kilos....impressive stuff. Another impressive lift was a 270kg bench by someone who's name I didn't get, but he was a monster (270kg is 594lbs)!

Check out the
big bench!
After the pre judging, a number of the Pro's set up tables in the foyer to sell photos and meet the fans. Marcus Rhul was a favourite being swamped and just about selling out of photos and DVD's. I worked out that he must of made at least $2500:00 in 40 minutes. Anoth popular stand was the Muscletech booth which hosted Dexter Jackson and Chris Cormier. I had a long chat to Craig Titus and found him to be a friendly, funny guy. A sad sight was Pro Stan McCrary sitting alone with an assortment of photos in front of him, with no interest from the crowd, playing snake on his phone. It doesn't matter if you're a Pro or not, if you don't place in the top 6, you can bet no one is going to be interested in you.

Dexter looked great and deserved his win. This was Dexter's 4th win from his last five shows with his 3rd place in the 2004 Arnold Classic being the only blemish. Chris was a bit smooth in the lower body. Crowd favourite was Marcus Rhul, man, he's huge! We all tend to be a bit blase with these guys when you see their pictures in all the mags, but when you see them standing in front of you......THEY ARE MASSIVE!! Horvath is underrated and could of easily slotted into 3rd place. marcus is huge, but his physique is all bunched up. King Kamali had the best routine and even include the Men At Work piece, Land Down Under, much to the crowds approval. In fact King was hilarious during the pre judging. When he hits a pose it is with all sorts of grunts, hissing and theatrics that by the end of the judging the crowd was hissing with him.
After the pre judging I followed Marcus Rhul back to his hotel through the busy Melbourne CBD traffic. Dressed in a cut off top and still tanned up, old ladies were running away and small children were sheltering be hind their parents. It was a funny site. |

Overall the show is an interesting one if you are into the Pro bodybuilding scene and next years show seems to be already heading for a success with the signing of this years top 3. I found that the expo itself was entertaining by just watching everyone who was there. Some of the best entertainment was in the crowd. My wife had the best quote of the night though, as a puffed up wannabe with imaginary lat syndrome was followed by a plastic endowed female she said, "Everything here is so fake".
Needless to say, I'll see you there again next year.
Keep pumping,
Kim. |

2004 San Francisco Pro Grand Prix Final Results
Dexter Jackson ran away with first place slamming out straight ones across the board and Lee Priest sealed up second with what may have been the best overall package of his entire career. This was a stark contrast to Lee's dismal showing at the Mr Olympia only a few months before. Kris Dim secured 3rd place and the final Olympia qualifying spot by dispatching a very difficult field in his IFBB rookie debut. Gustavo Badell finished a solid 4th and Ahmad Haidar rounded out the top 5. Former Mr Olympia, Samir Banout was in the field but pulled out before the show and chose to guest pose instead. It was a fitting decision as judging by the photos he would of placed last.

2004 Arnold Classic Dexter Robbed?
As Jay Cutler took his third straight Arnold Classic tittle the consensus of the audience was that Dexter Jackson should have been the rightful winner instead of the recipient of third place. However, history now will record that Jay Cutler won the 2004 Arnold Classic by one point over Chris Cormier. The special $10,000 posing award was won by King Kamali and for the third time in succession Jay Cutler won the most muscular award.

TV Makes Kids Fat. Or Does it?
According to reports from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the American Psychological Association, commercials for junk food cause children to become obese.
That's odd, because the last time we checked, TV didn't have any calories, even if you lick the screen during a
Macca's commercial. So maybe TV isn't directly making the kids fat, but rather the parents who buy the crappy foods for them and use TV and video games as electronic babysitters are. And maybe, just maybe, kids are fat these days because their parents do nothing but role model couch potato behavior for them.
Nah, that makes far too much sense. Let's blame TV commercials. It's easier than actually facing the real
problem.

Dumbbells in Denmark
Last week in Denmark, in mates in Nyborg State Prison rioted over the prison board's decision to remove their heavy weight training equipment.
"Some inmates have grown to abnormal size," Carsten Pedersen, the chairman of the Union of Danish Prison Officers, said. "They have become monster men."
Pedersen said there had been many cases of "inmates with aggressive attitudes" and blamed this on heavy dumbbells and steroid use. (They were allowed to keep the lighter dumbbells.)
Hey Pedersen, they're inmates in one of the highest security prisons in the country. We're willing to bet they were "aggressive" even before they discovered heavy weight training, numbnuts.

Arnold Classic DEA Subpoenas
At the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio the D.E.A. proceeded to serve subpoenas to various pro bodybuilders all in connection with Milos Sarcev. In December, agents from the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency raided the home of champion bodybuilder, Milos Sarcev in Fullerton, California. The DEA took his computer among many other things and the shit has hit the fan from there.
Sarcev trained Balco Labs client, Tim Montgomery just before he set the world record in the 100 metre event back in September in 2002. Sarcev has also prepared several pro bodybuilders for competitions apparently leaving this information for the DEA to read on his computer. It doesn't take a genius to know where all these subpoenas are stemming from. , Sarcev's attorney has stated that it is possible his client is the target of this investigation. I'm here to tell you it's not only possible but it's exactly what's going on. Several of the IFBB Pros who have received subpoenas say that the agents were asking what their relations were to Milo Sarcev.
The bodybuilders went on to say the agents also asked what their relations to Dennis James were and if they knew any information in regards to any illegal activity between Sarcev and James. Sources say this is an on going investigation in an attempt to try to build a case against Sarcev. My sources say the case has to do with steroid distribution which is a federal offense. Sources also say the agents were at Shawn Ray's home several weeks ago talking with Shawn for over an hour. Being that Shawn Ray was not served a subpoena and the agents possessed no warrant to enter his home, what exactly was the reason for Mr. Ray's co-operation. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall that day.
Imagine being in the hotel room the night before your show and the police knock on your door to ask you about a possible connection with steroid sales... holy shit! Talk about stress levels sky rocketing The grand jury is set for March 24th in Iowa. Only time will tell who got served and how many IFBB Pros will actually testify.
To make matters worse, Arnold's police security along with their dogs were walking around back stage and in the hotel smelling every bag they could get close to. This put a very thick layer of tension in the air making this year's Arnold Classic very weird to say the least.

Salads vs. Burgers
In the world of fast food, it doesn't matter if you really make your menu healthier, as long as you make it seem healthier.
The new McDonald's Caesar salad contains 425 calories and over 21 grams of fat (counting the croutons and dressing). The standard McDonald's burger contains 253 calories and just under 8 grams of fat.

Meta-Cel

Meta-CEL is a new dietary supplement designed specifically for individuals who are trying to gain lean body mass fast, without adding fat weight. Meta-CEL provides a precise synergistic blend of two revolutionary new complexes-the patent-pending Phosphitol™ and the exclusive Potentin™, shown in recent studies to help promote volumizer transport into muscle cells and increase lean body mass-safely and effectively, without the use of high amounts of sugars and/or carbohydrates, harmful pro-hormones, or pro-steroids.
Potentin and Phosphitol work synergistically within Meta-CEL to enhance two different functions in the body: the highest achievable gut tolerance and increased myocellular (muscle cell) retention of creatine-formulated to promote complete absorption (thereby avoiding any possible intestinal distress) and to enhance whole body creatine retention... all without adding unnecessary sugars or producing insulin spikes, which makes it ideal for "carbo-phobics" or calorie cutters.
First, Phosphitol contains a vital "energy-producing" compound stored in muscle cells. "Supersaturating" the muscles with elements in this revolutionary complex may "open the door" to new muscle growth by activating the muscle cells to respond to increased hydration within cells, which may assist in muscle cell development and gains in lean or fat-free mass.
Next, Potentin contains critical "nutrient-driving" elements, which may increase the activity of existing creatine-specific proteins in muscle cells. Using this compound may help "revolve the door" by potentiating or boosting the effects of Phosphitol and transporting its primary components into the muscle cells, to store them there and promote muscle cell volume.

Ute
Those of you who have been to the shop recently may have noticed
the new Aussie Muscle Falcon Ute. Yes, I have lashed out and bought
a 2001 model EA ute. Finished in a striking dark blue duco with
green and gold sign writing depicting the flexing kangaroo, it's
an eye catcher. I want to see just how eye catching this ute is.
If you see the Aussie Muscle ute on the road, call me on 8373 0735,
and tell me where you saw it, and you will win a prize. The first
person to call me each month wins the prize. Seeing the ute in the
shop carpark, in my driveway, or at Limbo Gym, does not count. In
the past month the ute has been at Sellicks Beach, Adelaide International
Raceway, and in the Adelaide hills, so I do get around.

SABBA Cancelled!
In a shock decision, the SABBA SA Titles scheduled for the 22nd of May have been canceled. The reason given was "a lack of interest". The committee felt that there were not enough competitors dieting to warrant a show. I'm not sure how they came to that decision considering in the past week alone, I have had 2 competitors come into the store who did not even know the show has been canceled. Needless to say, they were a bit upset. All competitors dieting have automatic qualification to the Southern Hemisphere. refer to

Arnold the Editor?
According to reports from the Arnold Fitness Weekend in Columbus, Ohio, the Governator announced that he's accepted a new job as executive editor of Muscle & Fitness and Flex, but will be donating his salary to charity.
I'm not sure what kind of maneuver this is, but allow me to let you in on something: it takes a lot of hours to be the editor of a magazine. It's not something you can do in your spare time, especially if you happen to be the governor of a state getting crushed by a fiscal tidal wave.
Maybe Arnold is going to be "editor" of those magazines in the same way he was the "author" of all those articles and bodybuilding books in the past i.e. the co-writer or ghost writer did most of the work (usually Bill Dobbins.)
Bermann Retires.
JULIETTE BERGMANN announced her retirement from women's bodybuilding (for the second and final time) after winning the Ms. O lightweight class for the third time in as many years.
Bergmann's comeback in 2001 packed surprises - she came out of mothballs to win that year's Ms. Olympia overall title in a shocker - and plenty of intrigue: Bergmann planned to redefine the women's sport with a more feminine softer look as the new female archetype. "But my goal of pushing a softer look died with the advent of the figure class," said Bergmann, "as figure is nothing more than a less extreme form of bodybuilding. If women bodybuilders become more feminine and softer, what will they do with the figure class?
"That's why I'm done with women's bodybuilding. The women have to be harder now - it is more hardcore, and that does not interest me at all."

Dangers
of Soy.
I've never been a fan of soy protein and soy products and tend
to avoid it like the plague. Some people even go out to say that
soy and its benefits is one of the biggest conspiracies around.
So how bad is this stuff? Bad enough that Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel
has written an explosive new book about it called The Whole Soy
Story. Testosterone Magazine recently had a chance to sit down
with Dr. Daniel and talk about this controversial subject. To
read the interview, click
here....
Soy Bomb
Just a few weeks after I ran the above Poison Protein article, many US newspapers and magazines began a new soy marketing campaign. Given that the lay public and mass media are always several years behind, I predict an anti-soy backlash in, oh, about 2010. When you see the "Shocking News about Soy" headlines, you can just shake your head and feel content that you knew all this years before.

Milos in the Middle
Veteran bodybuilder Milos Sarcev has apparently been dragged into the BALCO Labs fiasco. Australian Muscle has learned that his home was raided last year by the DEA and his computer was confiscated. His lawyer, Rick Collins, said no steroids were found.
Milos has described himself as a friend of Victor Conte, the supplement manufacturer who's accused of distributing performance-enhancing drugs to elite athletes. Milos has worked with several of the big name athletes caught up in the scandal and has reportedly designed weight-training programs for sprinter Tim Montgomery. Sarcev has also worked with former Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski, another athlete in hot water over the BALCO scandal.
The buzz on the street revolves around one point: why is a pro-bodybuilder designing athletic performance programs? Milos is known as a pretty smart guy when it comes to training and nutrition, but message board skeptics wonder if he was designing "other" types of cycles for the athletes.
Sarcev and his attorney have denied involvement with anything drug related.

Good News, Bad News
The bad news: You're going to die someday.
The good news: You can prevent most causes of death and at least delay the inevitable a while.
According to a study in the March 10th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, about half of all deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to largely preventable behaviors and exposures. The big killers? Tobacco, poor diet, and lack of exercise.
Here's how the leading causes of death broke down in the year 2000:
Tobacco: 435,000 deaths or 18.1 percent of total U.S. deaths.
Poor diet and no physical activity: 400,000 deaths or 16.6 percent of total deaths.
Alcohol consumption: 85,000 deaths or 3.5 percent of total deaths.
