Max's 2002 INBA Australian Titles Oct 26th
With nearly 200 competitors, this years INBA Australia was the biggest bodybuilding show I have attended. The quality in all classes was exceptional with hardly any one not deserving to be on stage. South Australia was represented by 13 athletes who looked resplendant in matching tracksuits supplied by Australian Muscle. Successful? You bet we were! Justin Firgaira was 2nd in the Juniors and was unlucky not to win. Ken Lavanda won the Novice Class, and celebrated by doing two perfect backflips on stage. Paul Watchel won the Open Tall Class and Joel Ramintas won the Open Short Class. Paul and Joel faced each other in the Overall Posedown with Joel coming away with the votes (6-4) to win the Mr Australia Title for the second year in a row. South Australia also won the "Max's State Of Origin" shield for the best state team, also for the second year in a row.

NABBA Universe Oct 12, London
Adelaide's Nick Jones capped off a successful year by placing second in the NABBA Universe Titles in England. This follows Nick's Overall win in the Nabba Australian Titles two weeks previously in Melbourne. This is Nick's best placing at the Universe, beating his 4th place a couple of years ago. Nick went to America from England and was photographed by some of the leading photographers in the USA. Keep an eye out for Nick in future editions of US mags. Adleaide's Lorraine March also went to the Universe and placed a credible 7th in the Tall Figure Classs. Australian Muscle wishes to congratulate all SA bodybuilders who competed at these shows. It's great to see SA dominating the National bodybuilding scene in all federations.

RONNIE TAKE THE FIFTH...JUST!
Coleman Holds On For Fifth Mr. O Win
In sharp contrast from the year before, Ronnie Coleman jumped out to a big lead, then held off a strong challenge from Kevin Levrone to record his fifth consecutive Mr. Olympia victory on Saturday, October 19 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ronnie Coleman

A year ago Jay Cutler almost knocked off the champ, holding a six-point edge over Coleman after the prejudging. Coleman came back at the Finals to win the ensuing two rounds and prevent the major upset. This time around, with Cutler passing on the show, Coleman, 38, was comfortably ahead of Levrone after the judging, only to see the latter come back to capture rounds three and four at night and give Coleman a push before The Big Nasty eventually prevailed with a nine-point margin of victory.

Kevin Levrone

Coleman, who carried about 252 pounds on his 5'11" frame, will carry another $110,000 into his bank account as a result of his victory, and a brand new Cadillac Escalade SUV, courtesy of Pinnacle, into his garage at his Arlington, Texas home as well.

Chris Cormier, considered by most as the main threat to snap Coleman's victory string, was a bit off his top form, and had to settle for third. Dexter "Action" Jackson, eighth a year ago, moved up all the way to fourth, one placing ahead of Gunter Schlierkamp, the biggest, literally and figuratively, surprise of the event. Schlierkamp, at 6'1" and 300 pounds the largest competitor in the 25-man line-up, received a special invite from Joe Weider to compete and showed up in tremendous condition, getting a standing ovation from the fans after his posing routine.

Chris Cormier and Dexter Jackson

Conversely, Lee Priest, at 5'4" and 200 pounds among the smaller contestants in the field, landed in the sixth slot for the third time in his career, a notch ahead of Flex Wheeler, who was back on stage after a one-year hiatus. Markus Ruhl finished eighth, while two repeat performers from last year's top 10, slipped a bit on 02. Orville Burke, who was sixth last year, fell to ninth, while Dennis James, the seventh place finisher in 01, rounded out the top 10.

The Top 3

’02 Ms. Olympia: Lenda’s Back in Town
LAS VEGAS—Lenda Murray blew in to the Mandalay Bay Events Center on October 17–18 looking to reclaim the crown she held for six consecutive years and accomplished her objective big time. The 40-year-old gym owner from Virginia Beach, Virginia, who lost the Ms. Olympia title to Kim Chizevsky in 1996 and then retired in 98, picked up perfect scores in all four rounds to take the Heavyweight class in her return to competition. Then in the battle for the Overall she did it again, doing to defending Ms. O Juliette Bergmann what Chizevsky had done to her and becoming the first ever seven-time Ms. Olympia. Seven Lightweights and eight Heavyweights made it to the big season finale this year. The top three in each class are automatically qualified for the ’03 Ms. O.

Lenda Murray

There’s no question that the perfectly proportioned Bergmann duplicated her mass and conditioning of last year. The 5’2”, 130-pounder who herself had ended a 13-year hiatus from the posing platform in 2001, dominated the class again with ones across the board, leaving ’00 Ms. O Heavyweight winner Valentina Chepiga 26 points behind in second. Chepiga, who dropped to Lightweight after finishing fourth last year, took second in all but the muscularity round. That honor went to Fannie Barrios, who was eight points behind Valentina in third.

Juliette Bergman

In the Heavyweights Murray more than proved true predictions that she’d be in fantastic shape and unbeatable. Her 5’5” of Flex Wheeler–like lines were big, cut and symmetrical, so much so that sitting Ms. O Heavyweight Iris Kyle didn’t have a chance for anything but a unanimous runner-up finish—despite her being bigger, more cut and maybe even better proportioned than Lenda. Murray’s quality and charisma ruled the day. Vickie Gates’ size and proportion earned her the number-three spot.

Myth #124: You gotta get sore to grow!
It's tough to convince people this myth is untrue. Trainees like immediate responses to weight training programs. Males especially are infatuated with fast muscle growth (I include myself in this category). Unfortunately, training that causes soreness creates a false sense of accomplishment. In other words, soreness will cause an immediate increase in girth measurements, but it's not due to added muscle; instead, a certain degree of swelling accompanies medium to severe soreness. This swelling is what's making the tape measure your new best friend. Within a few days, the soreness (and swelling) is gone and so is the new "size"!
But what about the talk of soreness causing increased secretion of growth hormone, Testosterone and IGF-1, therefore leading to increased muscle growth? Sorry mate, but I ain't buying it. Early in my training career I thought this statement was true, but years of experience have shown otherwise. From my observations, I can tell you the studies I've read supporting such a claim aren't translating into new muscle growth.
I could do many things to your body to make it sore (hit you in the biceps repeatedly with a tire iron, for example) and it wouldn't elicit a muscle growth response! Make no mistake about it: extreme muscle soreness slows the recovery process. If you want fast muscle gains, avoid severe soreness. You can take that statement to the bank (and tell them I sent you).

THINK ABOUT IT
Remember that, in general, the easier you make an exercise (as with one of those new, "state-of-the-art" machines), the less beneficial the exercise becomes. Conversely, the harder (as in effort) an exercise is, the greater the overall benefit. Cases in point: all other things being equal, it's a lot easier to do a leg extension than a barbell squat, or a lat machine pull down than a barbell row. Guess which ones are better for building size and strength and prolonging youth!

If I could leave you with one phrase to summarize weight training, it would be:
If you want to lift big, you must learn to think big.
Now there's a phrase for your ripped-up muscle shirts!

Introducing The First Gene Manipulating Supplement
New Anabolic Compound Delivers Genetic Message Telling Your DNA To Build More Muscle

If this is not the most exciting supplement message you've ever read it will be shocking . . . because for the first time there's a legal way to manipulate your genetic code, your DNA, to build more muscle.

This is not a pipe dream, a wish, a hope . . . it's the real deal.

There's a new compound from Russia called Rhaponticum carthamoides, the natural version of a compound you may already be familiar with, 20 Hydrox-ecysterone . . . the hot new anabolic from Russia. However, natural Rhaponticum has one property in particular that is far more pronounced than in its synthetic counterpart. And it's this one factor that just may be the answer to what you've been searching for your entire bodybuilding life . . . how to alter your genetics.

This is not an unsubstantiated claim . . . the research from Russia is very, very conclusive. Study after study clearly demonstrates Rhaponticum stimulates "genetic messages" to your DNA!

Let's dive right in and talk about it! When a muscle grows, about a zillion things have to take place in the body . . . but the most crucial is a "message" part of your muscle cell, called the ribosome, receives. The ribosome is your personal muscle making factory, the production line!

The ribosome receives the message to make more protein from messenger Ribonucleic acid, RNA! RNA is your body's replication system! If you need more muscles because you're training hard the message is sent . . . "working harder, lifting a ton, need bigger and more muscle fibers to carry the load" . . . as your RNA screams to the ribosomes!

Anyway, that's what RNA does . . . it creates various amino acid chains (DNA) that eventually wind up on your biceps, or pecs as muscle tissue!

So it's only logical that the more messengers you've got, the more telegrams you're going to deliver to the ribosomes. That's not too difficult to understand, is it? However, not everybody's messenger system is as efficient. Maybe you've got a genetic chemical imbalance that slightly misdirects electrons that act as transmission lines into the muscle cell. This is very complex bio-chemistry, but it may be the reason for some guys getting huge and some guys staying small!

Think about it . . . that's how muscle is ultimately built! If only you could see the incredible machine you are on the inside. . . the trillions of conversations your cells have on a daily basis. Muscle doesn't grow automatically, it's a computerized mechanism ingeniously created by an intelligence that is difficult to comprehend.

However, scientists do know a lot, and the thing most important to you is . . . the clear proof that Rhaponticum does significantly increase RNA synthesis . . . the lynchpin for all new muscle growth. The "one factor" that may be missing in your quest to get huge! Now, you may be asking, why does Rhaponticum have this uncanny ability to cause massive RNA synthesis? Here's your answer!

In the 1950's when Russian scientists started investigating the pharmacological properties of Rhaponticum . . . they didn't do it because they just felt like it, they did it because deer that lived in Northern Siberia were immediately attracted to the Leuzea herb, (which contains Rhaponticum) and ate it!

Scientists knew the Leuzea must contain adaptogenic properties. This goes right back to our discussion on messenger RNA . . . it's how efficient your muscles adapt to environmental stress . . . and these deer certainly had to "adapt" quickly or their environment would kill them.

However, your messenger RNA doesn't know if you're stressing your muscles in Gold's Gym with lots of cute babes walking around . . . or tearing them down like man did 5 million years ago . . .by running away from a sabertooth tiger.

You better adapt and get faster or you're lunch! And as you now know, this "adaptation" works much better with lots of messenger RNA telling the ribosomes to make bigger and stronger proteins so you can survive and thrive anywhere youneed to.

Now, unless some of these babes at Gold's Gym are on Anadrol 50, you aren't threatened on a daily basis by wild predatory animals.

However, the deer in Siberia who eat this RNA synthesizing herb are!! Every day is life threatening because some big Siberian Tiger is hungry. Talk about protein turnover. Their RNA synthesis mechanism has to be extremely efficient or it's "over with". And the Russian scientists proved it was the Rhaponticum extract that was causing their protein turnover to go crazy!

Yes, you can now dramatically stimulate the necessary metabolic mechanism that can take you beyond your natural genetic ceiling! And lots of guys already are with a natural Rhaponticum compound called Vyo-Var.

Remember, synthetic 20 Hydroxye-cysterone does not have nearly the same ability to stimulate RNA synthesis . . . this is crucial, and only the natural Rhaponticum that's contained in Vyo-Var has this unbelievable capacity to really ignite your genetics.

 WHAT'S THE GOSS?

Gossip is sourced from various sites such as muscletime.com, getbig.com, nuclearnutrition.com, ironmagazine.com

Olympia Tidbits
Just before Don Youngblood took the stage, Craig Titus looked at Don and respectfully said, "Make sure you hold in that gut". Don acknowledged Craig's "advice" with a nod and walked on stage.

A courageous effort. Darrem Charles, still recovering from the emotions of losing his Mom, made a solid showing. Although it was not good enough for a top placing, it was enough to defeat nine competitors including King Kamali.

Before the show, Dexter Jackson was asked what placing would make him happy, he said top 5. He ended up 4th.

During the press conference, Ernie Taylor was asked if his triceps were real. He replied with a written statement proclaiming his innocence. According to Taylor, his freaky triceps are a gift from God...Some gift!

Chad Nichols, the diet doctor has don it again. He completely reinvented Lenda Murray's physique. The improvements were phenomanal and the results can be summed up in two words: MS OLYMPIA!

Clean and Serene Flex Wheeler's comeback proved more successf
ul than his seventh-place showing may imply. Having committed to a contest prep that left his biochemical innards sparkly clean (for more, see "Hard Times," January, '03), Wheeler was a smaller version of his usual fabulousness, but could have even been better, according to observers who claimed he was fuller days before the show. However, Wheeler, known for his somewhat aloof stance over the years and a propensity to suck on an oxygen tank backstage, was the picture of health and vitality, exhibiting loads of kinetic energy, while offering a helping hand and encouraging words to fellow competitors. He exhibited the kind of sportsmanship and class that gives bodybuilding a good name.

If Mr. Olympia physiques were musical compositions, the contest would have been part classical symphony, part heavy metal concert. Competitors like Dexter Jackson and Chris Cormier are the flowing violins and cello movements, with muscle bellies, tie-ins and lines that blend together like a Mozart concerto. Then there's Markus Rühl, whose unapologetic mass, giant limbs, beefy torso and in-your-face posing routine is more like a thudding rock anthem. Rühl, who finished a respectable eighth, is the perfect embodiment of a song by Rammstein, the German heavy metal band. No wonder Markus often poses to the group's music, as he did in this Olympia and last year's. It's the perfect match.

A "natural" Flex Wheeler (r) gave away a bit of size to a gigantic Marcus Rhul

Seeing the success of Juliette Bergman must of spurned Laura Creavalle back into the Ms Olympia competiton. Unfortunately things did not go perfectly to plan as Laura finished in seventh place in the lightweight class.

Still Superman
The Awesome Aussie Lee Priest has unequivocally reclaimed his elite status in the sport after his short layoff last year. The 2002 Olympia was vintage Priest, as the 5'4" power-plug didn't shy from the tall timber (e.g. Schlierkamp at 6'1") during the riotous posedown. With some of the best bodyparts in the sport, the 30-year-old Priest can only get better.

More on Superman.
In between contests where he routinely amazes his fans with his density-per-square-inch, Lee Priest likes to go fast in cars - his car, your car, anybody's car, it really doesn't matter. Now the racing fanatic (see "Hard Times," December FLEX) is hopping into a dragster, as the accompanying photos attest. Schooling Priest on the fine art of drag racing is Rod Fuller (no, he's not a spokesman for Viagra), 2002 Sportsman Driver of the year and Racer of the Decade. Fuller, which isn't a bad name for a bodybuilder either, has over 60 wins and three championships in the speed sport to his credit. The drag-racing superstar is also a big fan of Lee's, but that's according to Lee. If all goes well, the Awesome Aussie will be putting the pedal to the metal in spring of 2003. Forget sprinter Kevin Levrone - Priest has to be the world's fastest bodybuilder these days.

Rumours are flying about Orville Burke's recent gym injury that occurred while he was warming up for a photo shoot with the incomparable Chris Lund for FLEX. Orville said that his right elbow had been inflamed for weeks - a doctor had been draining it before the Olympia. After the Olympia, where he finished ninth, Orville said he felt fine and ready for the shoot with FLEX on October 24. He was warming up with a 50-pound dumbbell when he felt a "pop" in his elbow. Lund wasn't shooting at the time. At first Orville thought it was a tendon tear in his triceps, an extremely serious injury, but since the accident, at least one physician has said it may be a ligament tear; bad enough, but nowhere as grim as a tendon tear. Orville planned on getting an MRI on October 30 to make sure, and hoping for the less serious diagnosis.
