WHY PROTEIN?
The first and most important change
that you will make on your quest for a lean and mean body will be an
increase in the amount of Protein that you consume. This applies
whether your goals are to build muscle, burn fat, or just get into
better shape. The reason for this increase in Protein intake is that
Proteins make everything in and on your body. Fingernails, hair, skin,
brain, internal organs, teeth, and of course, muscle.
Muscle is the key word here because the amount of muscle that you have
directly affects your metabolism, not to mention your looks. The lean
and hard physique that men desire as well as the tight and toned look
that women want can both be achieved by adding more muscle. The way to
add more muscle is to workout with weights, consume adequate amounts
of protein throughout the day, and get enough rest. (Note to women:
Working out with weights will not make you "bulky."
Testosterone causes men to get that big, bulky look. Women, by
definition, do not have enough Test to get that way. By putting on
more muscle, you will increase your metabolism and look more like a
fitness model than a bodybuilder.)
Let me explain how this works: Contrary to popular belief, you do not
build muscle when you workout. When you lift weights, you are actually
breaking down your muscle tissue. Immediately after working out, your
body begins to repair and recover. It does this by taking Protein and
breaking it down into individual Amino Acids, then reconfiguring them
and placing them wherever they need to go. Instead of just rebuilding
your muscle back to normal, your body super compensates. That means
that you will be gaining muscle. This is what happens if you have
enough Protein in your system. On the other hand, if you don't have
enough Protein, your body goes into a catabolic state.
This, unfortunately, is what happens to most people. In this
situation, your body does not have enough Protein to rebuild, so it
begins to break down your existing muscle to repair what was broken
down in the gym. Obviously, this is not productive. This is the reason
why so many people don't get the results they want and get
disillusioned with working out. Fortunately, you can avoid this common
mistake by simply taking in an adequate amount of Protein each and
every day.
Figuring out what an "adequate" amount of Protein is for
your body is fairly simple. It is anywhere from 2 to 3 grams per kilo
of bodyweight spread over 5 - 6 meals.
Now, unless you have the time to pre-prepare your meals and take them
with you, eating this many times will be next to impossible. That's
why Protein supplements are essential.
Why should I eat more often if I'm trying to lose weight? Shouldn't I
eat Less? Not at all. Probably the biggest mistake that people make
who are trying to lose body fat is to not eat enough. The human body
is designed to be fed every three to four hours; that's how our
metabolism burns. By eating only twice or three times a day, you are
putting your body into a fast state. When it is in this state, it is
in storage mode. That means that if you wait longer than 4 hours to
eat, you're body is more than likely to store the meal as body fat,
even if it is a good meal. On the other hand, if you eat every 4
hours, and your meal is in the right ratio of macronutrients (which
means higher Protein, lower Carbs and lower Fat), your metabolism will
be kicked into high gear!
Earlier, I said that having more muscle will lead to a faster
metabolism. This is because the only thing that powers your body is
muscle. Every action from walking to breathing and even blinking is
powered by muscle. Muscle is the only part of your body that burns
calories, so the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will
be, period. That means that even sitting on your butt, doing nothing,
you will burn quite a few more calories if you have five more pounds
of muscle than you do now. Conversely, our metabolism will be slower.
This leads me back to what a Fast state is. When you are in this
state, it means that you have not fed your body for at least four
hours. After the four hours are up, as I pointed out earlier, your
body tends to store whatever food hasn't been used for energy now as
energy for emergencies (which is body fat). Now, whatever energy you
have for whatever you do is being supplied by muscle mass. Yes, your
body is now sacrificing brain tissue, internal organs, skin and muscle
mass to supply you with the energy that you need to get through your
day. Talk about a vicious circle! Not only are you depriving your body
of the Protein it needs to rebuild and repair what you destroyed in
the gym, but your storing record amounts of body fat and permanently
lowering your metabolism by breaking down precious muscle mass and
using it for energy! And it's not even that great of an energy source.
You will find that, once you increase your Protein intake, you will
sleep better, recover faster, and have TONS of energy!

Check Out The Big Dude!
Recently my wife was going through some
old photos and found a lot of my old contest photos. I had a couple of
choices on what to do with these pictures, 1.I could place them back
in the box, or 2. I could place them all on the net and let you all
laugh at them. No, seriously, I am not embarrassed about them,
everyone has to start somewhere. These photos are from as long ago as
1987 where I weighed in at a whopping 62kgs in my first competiton.
Enjoy.

Nice Striations!

Pro ALA

|
|
ProAla™ is a high
quality source of the intermediary metabolite alpha lipoic acid.
This key nutrient is very beneficial to the hard training
athlete from two very important perspectives.
Alpha lipoic acid has been
shown to have powerful antioxidant properties. By fighting free
radical damage and strengthening the cellular integrity this
action helps to prevent the potential damaging effects of
physical stress. This is an important consideration for athletes
who want to maximize their growth potential and minimize the
catabolic consequences of physical training.
The alpha lipoic acid in ProALA™
has also been shown to be an effective glucose driver pushing
the uptake of energizing carbohydrate into the muscle cell. This
action helps to accelerate recovery and promotes the anabolic
effects of intracellular glycogen uptake.
ProAla™
supplementation has been shown to:
- Exhibit powerful
antioxidant activity supporting Vitamin C&E at the
cellular level helping to protect cellular integrity.
- Enhance glucose uptake into
the muscle cell which helps to accelerate recovery and
increase glycogen storage.

Macro Whey

|
Gen-Tec
Macro Whey is a superior high quality protein blend.
Instantised WPI and ultra filtered WPC (containing whey
peptides) are the main ingredients. Quickly absorbed and a
high glutamine content make WPI and WPC for post training.
However, the development team at Gen-Tec Nutrition have
endeveavoured to improve whey protein alone, making Macro Whey
more versatile and potent, leading to superior results.
Calcium Casienate (high quality milk protein isolate) and
EFA's (essential fatty acids) have been added to improve
nitrogen retention, provide joint support, and allow a
sustained release of amino acids into the blood stream.
Macro Whet is fortified with Glycerol and L-Glutamine for cell
volumising and extra muscle growth.
Finally fructose replaces any artificial sweeteners to both
replenish liver glycogen and slightly increase insulin levels
for superior uptake of proteins.
Gen-Tec Nutrition have produced a product with results being

Toronto Pro Invitational
May 12th 2001

I guess size really
does matter. At least it does to the judges who presided at the
Toronto Pro Invitational, where an off-peak Orville Burke edged a
superbly conditioned Dexter Jackson on May 12 at the John Bassett
Theatre. The New York–based Burke said he was carrying 268 pounds on
his 5'10" frame. Based on his relatively soft look, particularly
in the glutes and hamstrings, it was several pounds of water too much.
Jackson, on the other hand, was sharp as a tack. The two were tied
going into the final posedown, where the judges obviously felt that
Burke's general mass advantage was enough to overpower the 5'6
1/2", 210-pound Jackson. Burke's three-point victory was a
disappointment not only to Jackson, but to the puzzled majority of
fans in the audience as well.
In addition to the $10,000 first-place prize, Burke won a new
motorcycle, courtesy of the local distributors of Prolab and
MuscleTech products. His win promptly tags him as the favorite to take
the Night of Champions at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan on Saturday
night in front of his hometown fans.
Night Of The Champions Sat
May 19th 2001
Maybe they should
just change the name of this contest to the Night of Controversy.
Granted, it's a time-honored tradition for the New York muscle fans to
question the judging panel's wisdom at the Night of Champions, but at
this year's edition, which was held on May 19 at the Beacon Theatre,
they booed every one of the top-five calls. Forget that the winner was
a local guy posing for his hometown fans—or that the guy, Orville
Burke, had tightened up some since his controversial victory at the
Toronto Pro Invitational the week before. They wanted Dexter Jackson,
second in Toronto and displaying his usual symmetrical package of
detailed muscularity. They wanted Tom Prince, who was arguably in his
all-time-best shape. Some even wanted Czech colossus Pavol Jablonicky
to finish ahead of the brawny Burke. Of course, that's not the way the
judges saw it, as Orville, who was 10th at the '00 Mr. Olympia and
fourth at last year's controversial NOC, finished the day with a
perfect score, with the rest of the placings not nearly as close as
the fans and the press pundits saw it.
Jackson was a solid second again, with Prince, who scored well in
every round but the symmetry comparisons, in third. Jablonicky was
fourth, and mighty Mike Matarazzo turned up in stellar shape to round
out the top five. Fortunately for Jablonicky and Matarazzo, the NOC is
a top-five Olympia qualifier, so they'll be joining Prince and the
other two, who were already qualified, at the big show in October.

One of the
highlights of the last two pro shows was a Norwegian chap named Tommi
Thorvildson. Tommi placed in the top 6 at both the Toronto Pro and The
NOC bringing on stage a massive ripped physique. Check out the photos
below.

Interplay between
Ronnie Coleman and Dorian Yates during the NOC. As the always eager
Coleman challenged Dorian to whip off his shirt, Yates quipped:
"You wouldn't ask an artist to show you his painting before he
was finished. I'm a work of art in progress." Then the Shadow
added that: "A lot can happen in five months." The Mr.
Olympia's in five months. You do the math. Of course, we'll follow
these developments closely in the coming weeks.

Ronnie and Dorian
Saying he had a message for a bodybuilder whose name rhymes with
"gay," bellicose behemoth King Kamali directly challenged
Shawn Ray during the NOC interlude. The caustic King promised Ray that
he would "bust yo ass" at the Olympia this October, while
Shawn impassively watched from his seat.

Most disappointed athlete from the Night of Champions was runner-up
Dexter "The Blade" Jackson who came away — like many —
wondering just what he has to do to win a pro show. Maybe pack on
twenty pounds and forget the streamlined midsection?
Greg Kovacs, was without question the most awful sight on the stage.
From the moment he walked on-stage, groans and screams of disgust were
heard from the crowd. Greg's distended belly overhung his waist by
almost a foot. And he could not even suck it in at all. It was quite
atrocious. He was not even in contest condition. One can only assume
that Muscletech gave him a "Do the NOC or lose the contract"
ultimatum, for why else would Greg embarrass himself in this manner?
Fifteen minutes into the pre-judging, Greg walked off the stage and
never returned.

During the weekend
of the 2nd of May, my wife and I attended the Filex Expo in Sydney.
The Filex is the largest fitness expo in Australia. Most of the
supplement companies were represented and some had pro bodybuilders on
their stands. Pros in attendance were Dexter Jackson, Jay Cutler, and
Luke Woods. Many bodybuilders, both pro and amateur posed on stage
throughout the weekend.

Jay Cutler and Dexter
Jackson being overshadowed by some huge dude from Adelaide.
