2000.......The Year That Was.
As we prepare for yet another festive season let's reflect a little on the the year that was 2000.
Bodybuilding:
Competitors for all federations in Australia were down except for the INBA which experienced huge increases in numbers all around the country. This was reflected in The INBA Australian Championships which had over 160 competitors! Next years INBA SA Titles on the 7th of October is already getting great interest and is set to be a big show. Chris Price is eager to defend his 2000 title along with other past natural champions who are set to make a comeback now that INBA is in SA.
Many non tested federations had their leanest year for competitors with the Olympics getting the blame as the authorities clamped down on steroids and other prohibited imports. The IFBB copped a blow late in the year with a couple of high profile pro bodybuilders being arrested for drug offences (see this months gossip for more details). These arrests aren't going to do the IFBB's Olympic cause any good. On a possitive note, South Australian Bodybuliders did well representing their state and country. Nick Jones was finally crowned Mr Australia and won his class at the World Titles. Gary Vendenburg won the SA, Australia Class, and World Class. Teri Roberts continued her graceful ways at the Australian and World Titles. Chris Price won the INBA SA and placed 3rd at the Australian Titles. Kim Knott must win the comeback of the year award. After retiring from bodybuilding and concentrating on the Ms Fitness, Kim came back this year to win the INBA SA Physique Title, The Overall INBA Australian Title, and then capped it off with the INBA Natural Olympia Overall Title. Special mention to Esther Pedisic who was The INBA fitness representative at the INBA Australian Titles. Congratulations to all.
Supplements:
The supplement industry continues to grow at such a pace that it is hard even for me to keep up. The best new supplement of the year? This has to go to MX-7! This anabolic flavone mimics the effects of testosterone without being androgenic, which means it's safe for the girls to use as well. MX-7 has been without a doubt the most well received supplement of the year (call me for more info). The best protein powder of the year has to go to the recently released Macro Whey by Gen-Tec Nutrition. Great tasting, great quality and easy to use makes it the number one. The best fat burner is a tie between Hydroxycuts and Bodyripped Thermogen. The introduction of the GST in July had a big impact on supplements as did the falling Australian dollar. There are a lot of good supplements out there (and some not so good) but the best supplement to add to your training is CONSISTENCY! Eat consistently, train consistently, and sleep consistently, and you'll get results.
Information:
The bodybuilding magazines continue to disappoint. Ever since the supplement industry realised that by buying out the magazines they can turn them into 200 page catalogue, the magazines have lost their way in providing unbiased information. The internet has taken over I feel as the bastion for good information, even though here you too have to wade through a lot of
B.S. The best site of 2000 still has to be the Testosterone Magazine site
(www.testosterone.net). This site is like your favorite magazine but different each week. The writers are intelligent and witty and extremely knowledgeable. Best of all it's free! Another good site is Muscletime
(www.muscletime.com). This site is updated nearly every day with news and gossip about your favorite pro stars. All IFBB competition results are on line within hours of the event along with pictures. This year they had pictures of the Olympia on line even before the show was over, and with in one week over 1400 pictures from the Olympia were on line. They regularly have off season pictures and interviews with the pros. Muscletime is the site for those who just want to see raw muscle at its best. The only catch is that it's not free, but the cost is not too bad. The best Australian site has to be mine
(www.australianmuscle.com.au). My site will always be free and will endeavor to have the latest news each month. The Australian Muscle E-Store will open in the new year for those of you who want the convenience of shopping at home.
I hope you reached your goals this year, if not, it's not too long now when you can make those resolutions for next year.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Thank you all for your support in making 2000 a successful year at Australian Muscle.

WHAT'S NEW?
|
Macro Whey by Gen-Tec Nutrition
|
|
Gen-Tec Nutrition have released a high quality
protein blend. Instantinised WPI and Ultrafiltered WPC are the main
ingredients. Qickly absorbed and a high glutamine content makes Macro
Whey fantastic as a post training protein supplement.
The main downfall of a lot of whey proteins is their poor ability to
retain nitrogen for periods of time. Gen-Tec have added calcium
casienate (a high quality milk protein isolate) and essential fatty
acids to improve nitrogen retention.
Macro Whey is fortified with glycerol and l-glutamine for cell
volumizing and extra muscle growth.
Gen-Tec have produced a product with results being #1 on the priority
list without compromising taste. Macro Whey is very easy to mix as a
quick shake, mousse or even freeze for gelati, and a taste second to
none.
Finally an Australian protein that tastes great and gives great results
at an affordable price. |

Flaxseed supplementation may affect T levels |
|
Bodybuilders have known for a long time that a diet that's too restrictive in fat can negatively impact Testosterone levels. We also know that incorporating flaxseed into our diets positively affects blood sugar, body fat levels and the immune system.
One of the goals in treating prostate cancer is to control hormone levels. Controlling hormones can possibly stop or slow the spread of the cancer. Researchers from leading medical centers conducted a study to examine if a diet that's less than 20% fat and incorporates 30 grams per day of flaxseed can effect cholesterol, total Testosterone, IGF-1 levels and the PSA score. Patients in the study followed this diet for three to four weeks prior to having their prostates removed.
The results indicate that a diet with less than 20% fat and 30 grams per day of flaxseed can significantly lower cholesterol, total T levels (by a whopping 16%), while not affecting PSA values. The take home message for those of us who don't have prostate cancer is don't follow a restricted fat diet (less than 20% fat) and supplement with 30 grams per day of flaxseed as it may impair your gains in the gym and, well, make you more interested in watching movies like Beaches. Flaxseed is healthy and should be a part of your daily diet, but never combine it with a fat restricted diet. |

QUOTE OF THE MONTH |
|
"I gotta' tell you, if a woman sat down next to me and started sharing my food, I'd be inclined to react much the same as any self-respecting carnivore. In other words, I'd chew her arm off, bury the bone, and then take a huge, steaming dump on the spot where I had buried it. Sorry, but nobody's touching my food while I'm eating it."

WHAT'S THE GOSS?
|
Sonny Schmidt, one of the most well known Australian bodybuilders, was arrested in Melbourne with his brother, and another friend for allegedly attempting to import 3k of Cocaine into Australia with intent to sell it. It seems that all three are in police custody, and these are very serious charges. Sonny came on the pro bodybuilding scene quite powerfully in 1991, coming in 2nd at the San Jose Pro, Niagara Falls Pro, Night of Champions, and the Danish Grand
Prix.

Flex Wheeler Hospitalized?
After the Olympia Weekend Mr. O contest, Flex went to the hospital after being treated by paramedics at the show. Flex was breathing quite hard during the Mr. O show, and at one time, could not get up after posing and bending over. Many athletes said that Flex was dehydrated, and that he did not time his eating and drinking correctly, for fear of holding water. Diuretics was another concern, as well as low sodium levels, but Flex did not say much. Flex did leave Las Vegas quite dissapointed in his 3rd place win.

Dorian Yates is back in massive workouts and he is doing some Guestposings! (He IS BIG!!). Rumours abound that Dorian is about to do a comeback. If this is the case it will be interesting to see how he'll go up against Ronnie
Coleman
.
Ronnie Coleman will compete at the 2001 Arnold Classic in Columbus Ohio in March! And former Ms.Olympia Kim Chizevsky returns ... only this time it's in the Fitness International competition instead. Four-time Classic winner Flex Wheeler will be back to defend his 2000 Arnold Classic title as will female winner Vickie Gates.
