Bodybuilding forums...you either hate them or love them. I have a love
hate relationship with forums. I can't seem to stay away from them, yet
when I'm on them I can't wait to get away. The problem with forums is that
every one is an expert. It does not matter what I might post and how right
I am, there is always a handful of "experts" that will howl you down.
These people are usually the ones that have 2000 posts to their names. I
bet they are pimply faced 15 year olds whose heroes are Ronnie and Jay and
their workouts consist of single arm curls in their rooms in between
posts.
I have been frequenting anabolex.com recently. This is an overseas forum
but has an Aussie Corner that
seems to be frequented by a half decent mob. I've been there for a while
as a "lurker" (a lurker is some one who frequents forums but does not
partake in any posts), but recently starting partaking and even starting a
few threads. I think I'm starting to get accepted but I still feel like
that new kid on his first day at a new school. Everyone looks at you but
nobody wants to talk to you. Any way, I'll keep frequenting 'bolex for a
while as I feel I'm starting to get accepted into their little family and
maybe one day, I too will have a 1000 posts to my name.
Check out the Aussie Corner on 'bolex (
http://www.anabolex.com/forums/aussie-corner/ ) and meet the
characters like Outlaw, MrBro, Hairyballs, ProLukeWood, and if you see
bigkim, make sure you say high.
I hope you enjoy this months issue.
Train hard,
Kim.

The Pre Contest Diet
The contest season is fast approaching and many of you are starting to get
ready to compete. Some of you may be preparing for the first time and this
can be daunting. The pre contest diet recently has been turned into some sort
of mysterious ritual that can only be accessed by turning over a lot of cash.
This need not be the case, a pre contest diet is actually very basic, the
hard thing is sticking to it. After being involved in the bodybuilding scene
for 2 decades, I have seen a lot of people get ready for their show and the
main reason why people fail is simply because they could not stick to the
diet.
The whole idea of a pre contest diet is to rid the body of fat so that all
the muscle definition shows up. The leaner you are, the better.
The ideal pre contest diet will preserve muscle. To build muscle on a pre
contest diet is very difficult, so your main priority should be to hold onto
your hard earned muscle.
Below is the diet that I used for my competitions. There is one major thing
you might notice and that is the lack of protein shakes. I drop all shakes
and replace them with a meal. Your body will burn more calories digesting
solid meals rather than liquid meals. The key here is metabolism. Speed your
metabolism up and you will be burning energy while sitting, and solid meals
will do that more efficiently than liquid meals
.
Meal 1 250ml of egg whites (1 Yolk). Half a cup of oats with 1 tbspn flaxseed
oil
Meal 2 250g of Fish (Hake), half corn on the cob, steamed vegetables
Meal 3 250g of Fish (Hake), small serve rice, steamed vegetables
Meal 4 Chicken Breast, steamed vegetables or fresh salad
Meal 5 Chicken Breast, steamed vegetables, fresh ring of pineapple
Meal 6 250ml of egg whites (1 Yolk).
I use this diet right up until the show. The only thing that changes in the
last week is the carb depletion and load stage. For a Sunday show, I will
deplete from Tuesday to Thursday only having the oats in the morning. From
Thursday evening (meal 5 & 6), I will progressively add carbohydrates
(usually sweet potato) with each meal.
Drink at least 4 litres of water everyday, more if you can.
Supplements
Just because I don't use a protein drink does not mean I don't use supplements.
Remember, a pre contest diet is about preserving muscle and your supplements
should reflect that. I use a lot of amino acids designed to hold onto muscle.
1. L-Glutamine 4 x 5g doses a day
2. Branch Chained Amino Acids (BCAA's) 4 x 5g doses a day
3. Essential Amino Acids 4 x 5g doses a day.
4. Flaxseed Oil
5. Multi vitamin
6. Calcium
7. CoQ10 for energy
8. Creatine
9. Flaxseed Oil
10. Fat Burner
These supps are listed in order of importance. You may notice I have a fat
burner last in the list. I don't believe you should add any thermogenics (fat
burners) until at least half way into your diet. Try to burn as much fat off
without thermogenics and only introduce them in the last stages to help get
rid of that stubborn last fat deposits.
Points to note:
On a pre contest diet you WILL be hungry, tired, and miserable. This is what
it's
all about. I have a saying, "the more miserable and hungry you are, the
better you will look".
Don't go crazy in the last week especially with carb depletion and loading.
If you look great 1 week out, then for heavens sakes don't change anything.
Deplete for no more than 2 days and carb load slowly.
Have 1 cheat meal (not day) a week. Have this meal for lunch rather than the
last meal of the day. I go to the pub for a nice steak and Crownie.
Start cardio slowly and add as needed. Start with 4 sessions a week and add
as needed. If the fats coming off, there's no need to add more.
Get a body fat test before starting. Australian Muscle can do one for free.
This test can determine how long you need to diet for.
The key to successful pre contest diet is preparation. I usually cook 3 days
of food at a time. This way the food is ready to go anytime. The only thing
I cook fresh every day is the veggies.
Buy the fish from a wholesaler, it's cheaper. Same with the eggs. I also strike
up a deal with my local butcher. Tell him you will come in twice a week for
all your chicken for up to 20 weeks and if he can fix the price.
Give yourself plenty of time. It's better to be ready 2 weeks early rather
than miss your peak by a week.
My changes in 20 weeks
I'm going to cut right to it. Here's EXACTLY,
word for word, what it takes for anyone to build a substantial muscle:
1. Genetics
2. Busting your ass in the gym
3. Knowing how to eat a lot of good food
4. Knowing what it means to "rest"
5. 12-15 YEARS of being consistent, and never missing a scheduled workout
(*note: you are allowed to miss 2-3 workouts in that 12-15 years for
funerals, family tragedy, etc.)
NOW.. here's how 1-5 plays out: Your GENETICS, you are born with,
and can do nothing about. Numbers 2,3,4, anybody can learn.
And #5.. is why 99.99999% of the people fail, and fall dead on their ass.
Notice is doesn't say "gear" or "steroids" in there at all. If you are one
of those people that walks around saying "he's just big because he's on
tons of shit!", then you will NEVER make it. NEVER!!
Steroids, GH, gear.. is the ultimate weak minded pussies excuse. Because,
if it's GEAR, they never have to admit they aren't good enough. These
people come up with an abstract excuse that no one can exactly pin point
(how much, exactly is "tons of shit"?), and that way they don't have to
admit they just ain't got it.
Notice the only thing you never hear someone say is: "I'm just not good
enough?"
2008 NEW YORK PRO FINAL
RESULTS May 10, 2008
A year ago, Kai Greene flew into the New York Pro under the radar before
using his sixth-place finish at the contest as a launching pad to bigger
and better things. On Saturday night, Greene used the 2008 version of
the New York Pro as a platform to confirm his status as one of the best
bodybuilders in the world.
From the moment he stepped onstage for this morning's prejudging at the
Tribeca Performing Arts Center, it was clear that, in this contest,
there was Kai Greene and everyone else, as Greene cruised to the second
pro win of his career in his hometown of New York City.
The same could not be said for the inaugural 202-pound class, where
Kevin English upset precontest favorite David Henry in an
ultra-competitive top five.
While Greene was the clear winner, the battle for second through fifth
was hotly contested. In the end, Kevin English followed up his win in
the 202-pound class with a runner-up finish in the men's open, while
Ronny Rockel (third), David Henry (fourth) and Craig Richardson (fifth)
rounded out the rest of the top five.

Those guys at the gym...
Barbody
The most common gym lurker. As the name implies, this guy works on
muscles to show off at the bar, with purpose of impressing chicks or
intimidating pencil necks. Usually, it's a young guy between 15-25 years
old, who's at the gym working on every upper body muscle he can see from
the front.
Chat Boy
This type of guy is rare, but you don't want to run into him. Chat boy
wants to discuss lifting, eating, or life in general with you, often in
great detail. Editor: I have a couple of these at my gym.
Stanky Stanky, for lack of a better term, stank. It wasn't a natural, "I
just busted my ass and sweated a fountain" type of odor - it was more of
a festering pile of sewage smell that assaulted the nose.
Mutterer
This guy loads the bar up with way too much weight, eekes out 3 reps
with bad form and then mutters "shit", loudly, after his set prematurely
ends. He's under the impression that everyone cares how much he's
lifting, and wants us to know that any other day he could have made the
lift. If you see this, make sure to avoid eye contact, otherwise you'll
end up hearing a lengthy, bullsh*t explanation for the travesty you have
just witnessed.
Mr. Scream
No matter what weight this guy is using, or what rep he's on, he feels
the need to share his pain with us. A certain amount of noise is
understandable, and even expected on certain movements (i.e., squats),
but nobody wants to hear you yell through 4 sets of pushdowns.
The Entourage
Another one that borders on cliché: You've seen the group of guys -
usually high school to early 20's - lifting together. They almost always
congregate at the bench or preacher station. They hog up this area
without seeming to do any work.
The Wanderer
This guy combines his love of walking with weightlifting. His routine:
load the bar up, do a set, walk around the gym for 10 minutes and repeat
4 or 5 times.
Enjoy The Journey by Dave
Draper
Years ago Merv Griffin hosted a program that included
a few bodybuilding guests. Merv asked them "What do you use all those
muscles for?" The bodybuilders answered by throwing a few poses. Merv
asked again, "No, I mean what do you use them for?" The muscular guests
again struck their poses, to which the unanswered host said, "I don't
think you understand. I asked what do you use them for?" Merv didn't get
his answer that day, or maybe he did. If he did, the bodybuilders were
not only missing the point of his question, but they also missed the
point of their daily training.
Like the strutting beach fellow, most of us spend our lives striving
forward toward goal after goal, PR after PR, pay raise after pay raise,
remembering only occasionally that it's a journey, not the destination,
that's so vitally important. As you move from workout to workout, are
you satisfied and joyful, or do you feel accomplishment only after a
monthly bench press PR?

INBA Radio Promotion 15th May.
Awesome radio promotion at 2 stations this morning
ahead of the INBA Brisbane Titles. First one we had the sports reporter
tan up one of the girls as you will see and he did a live cross while
doing it, and then we went into the studio for a second run on air half
hour later and they spoke on air to each competitor. Then the second
station was a rather in depth chat with the competitors as the radio
jocks were so overawed that they couldn't believe how ripped and
muscular they were, so all up we got about 6 minutes of air play this
morning and several reminders at the end of each half hours sports
report. Success rating was an 12 out of 10..!!

GRIPMASTER conditions the fingers, hand, wrist and forearm
with a unit you can carry in your pocket.
Professional sports trainers, athletes, and therapists use GRIPMASTER because
of its unique ability to provide an effective isolated resistance workout.
All athletes have a common goal to develop and maintain strength, control,
endurance, coordination, and dexterity to ensure their competitive edge.
GRIPMASTER is here to help you reach and accomplish your goals.
HOW IT WORKS
The wrist (1) and finger (2) flexors are the longer muscles of the forearm
and wrist (extrinsic).
These muscles lie in the forearm and their tendon components cross the wrist
and attach to the bones to move the fingers and wrist.
Exercise these for greater grip power and endurance.
The smaller muscles of the hand (intrinsic), lie at the base of the thumb
(3), small finger (4) and across the hand (5 & 6).
They provide the finer movements, coordination, and control of the fingers
and do not cross the wrist.
The GRIPMASTER works to improve strength, endurance and coordination of
all the muscles within the hand and most muscles and tendons in the forearm.
The PRO is our most advanced hand exerciser. It's ideal for professional
athletes and motivated individuals seeking maximum performance. The PRO
expands on the ingenious design of Gripmaster providing serious athletes
with the most advanced technical hand exerciser in the world. Like
Gripmaster it isolates and strengthens each finger individually, helping
you improve your overall strength, endurance, and dexterity. Available
in two different models of graduated resistance: Extra-Heavy and Heavy.

Country Classic Invitational
Just a quick post to let you know that the Country Classic
Invitational is only just around the corner.
This year looks like being the best show ever with entrants from
every State in Australia and New Zealand showing interest in the
show.
The usual prizes are on offer, with the Men’s Open winner taking
home a Plasma TV, DVD player, Home Theatre System as well as a
Gold Medallion and the Championship belt.
As an added bonus, the Men’s Open winner will also get a cover
shot on Hardcore Aussie Muscle as well as a 6 page profile.
We are doing our best to encourage Women’s Bodybuilding so this
year the Iron Mike Memorial Medallion will be presented to the
winner of this class.
Along with the medallion goes a beautiful watch, kindly donated
by Phil Kabakoff.
This brings the total prize pool for the Women’s Bodybuilding
class to around $1,000.
This is the first year that we are awarding an Iron Mike
Memorial Medallion.
It is awarded to someone who we think epitomises the true
hardcore spirit of bodybuilding, but for this year only we have
decided to award it to the winner of the Women’s Bodybuilding
class in an attempt to encourage more women to compete in this
class.
For those who want to see Australia’s best ever female
bodybuilder, then we have a very special treat for you.
Christine Envall is our special Guest Poser for this show! Her
partner Troy phoned me and requested that Christine be able to
Guest Pose at the show.
She is due to make her Pro comeback later this year and is using
the CCI as a bit of a warm-up.
She will be in tip-top shape and has been dieting for the last
few months especially for this Guest Posing appearance.
If Christine’s physique isn’t quite your thing then don’t worry,
because Australia’s favourite IFBB Figure Pro, Arina Manta, is
also Guest Posing at this year’s CCI and is working very hard on
a special routine just for this show.
Two Aussie female Pros featured on the one billing; it doesn’t
get much better than that!
Arina will be one week out from her competition condition and
will be competing in the US the week after the CCI.
This will probably be the last chance that you will ever get to
see both women in contest shape in Australia, as they only
compete on the US Pro circuit, so don’t miss out on seeing them
before they travel overseas to represent us in the IFBB Pro
Division.

haven’t received one and you would like one, please contact me
and I will post one out.
You must have an Open State title to qualify for this class.
Sponsorships are still available too.
Once again if you are interested please contact me and I will
send you out a Sponsorship Package.

Max's Muscle TV Series 2 Monday the 7th
of July at 8pm.
Muscle TV series 2 is being edited as we speak. The official
start date on Foxtel's Aurora channel is Monday the 7th of July
at 8pm.
Series 2 will be different than the first series in several
ways. We have done away with all the fluffy bits, back to the
basics with training nutrition and science.
We have filmed all the training segments and they have been
brutal. Congratulations and thanks to everyone that contributed.
Most will make to air, some may not. In the first series we
filmed the segments around the athletes, probably went a bit
soft to make sure everyone looked good. This time, it is all
real, Tony Doherty has really pushed the athletes to the brink
with no resting or re-shooting. Some people were fitter than
they looked and some had their fitness tested. Some were a bit
pale or ill at the end of their workout.
Tony have really emphasized good form, high intensity and
getting your mind into the muscle you are training.
Thanks to Max's and Keith at Kickstart media for their
encouragement and belief. I have had a blast filming and taken
some good hits for the show like being kicked , punched and
thrown out of the ring said Tony.
I hope you all enjoy the second series as much as we enjoyed
making it. Most of all I hope the training segments help
everyone to train smarter, harder and more efficiently.
