When your muscles contract during training or during any other activity, ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) provides energy by releasing a phosphate molecule, degrading to ADP (Adenoside Diphosphate). Muscle storage of ATP, under extreme exertion, can only last for 10 - 15 seconds. After this muscles rely on creatine to restore ADP to ATP, hence its importance.
Creatine donates a phosphate molecule to ADP to reform to ATP, which is then used for energy. Basically your ability to regenerate ATP and sustain energy depends on your supply of creatine.
